Fostoria Glass Co began in 1887 in Fostoria, Ohio. Four years later, they moved to Moundville, WV. At one time, Fostoria was the largest producer of handmade glassware in the US, employing 1000 people. Its "American" pattern, introduced in 1915, is the most popular glassware pattern in the history of glassmaking, still being produced by Lancaster Colony, who purchased Fostoria in 1983. They were forced to close the company in 1986, due to foreign competition and outmoded facilities.
